Polyvagal Theory Has Not Been “Debunked”

I’ve seen this pattern many times in the healing world: a scientific debate becomes a social-media verdict, and suddenly people start throwing away tools that were actually helping them regulate, breathe, reconnect, and make sense of their bodies.

Recently, Polyvagal Theory has been caught inside this exact storm. A group of researchers published a strong critique arguing that some of the theory’s neurophysiological and evolutionary claims are scientifically “untenable.” You can read the critique here: Why The Polyvagal Theory Is Untenable.

Then the internet did what the internet does: it flattened nuance into a headline. Suddenly, people started saying, “Polyvagal Theory has been debunked.”

The truth is more precise, and much more useful: some mechanisms inside Polyvagal Theory are being seriously challenged, but that does not mean the entire clinical framework, the language of nervous system regulation, or the body-based practices inspired by it are useless.

 

What Polyvagal Theory Actually Gave Us

Polyvagal Theory, developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, offered a way to understand the autonomic nervous system beyond the old, simple “fight-or-flight” model. Instead of reducing human behavior to willpower, discipline, or mindset, it helped people see that the body moves through different survival states.

In simple language, Polyvagal Theory gave us a map for understanding:

  • felt safety and social connection
  • sympathetic activation, often experienced as fight-or-flight energy
  • shutdown, freeze, collapse, or dissociation, often seen in trauma responses
  • neuroception, the nervous system’s below-conscious scanning for safety or threat
  • co-regulation, the way one regulated nervous system can help another nervous system settle

This matters because many people with trauma, chronic stress, emotional exhaustion, or high-achiever burnout do not need to be told to “think positive.” They need to understand why their body reacts as if danger is present even when the mind knows they are technically safe.

That shift is not small. It changes shame into understanding. It changes self-attack into body awareness. It changes “What is wrong with me?” into “What state is my nervous system in right now?”

 

What The Critique Is Actually Saying

The strongest critiques do not simply say, “regulation is fake” or “safety does not matter.” That would be absurd. The nervous system is real. Dysregulation is real. Trauma responses are real. The need for safety is real.

The critique is more specific. Researchers are questioning whether some of Polyvagal Theory’s anatomical, evolutionary, and measurement claims are accurate enough to support the full model.

The main contested points include:

  • whether the evolutionary story of the vagus nerve is as clean as the theory suggests
  • whether the separation between ventral vagal and dorsal vagal functions is too simplified
  • whether respiratory sinus arrhythmia, often abbreviated as RSA, can be used as a direct measure of vagal tone

This last point is important. RSA refers to the natural change in heart rate that happens with breathing. Recent scientific recommendations argue that RSA should not be overinterpreted as a simple, direct measurement of vagal tone. So yes, there is a legitimate scientific debate. But a debate about mechanism is not the same as proof that every practice, clinical insight, or somatic tool connected to Polyvagal Theory has no value.

Mechanism Is Not The Same As Usefulness

Here’s what actually works in mature science: theories are tested, challenged, refined, corrected, and sometimes partially replaced. That is not collapse. That is how knowledge grows.

A framework can be imperfect and still clinically useful. A map can need correction and still help someone get out of the dark. This is where people lose the thread. They hear “the mechanism may be wrong” and translate it into “the whole thing is fake.” That is not rigorous thinking. That is reaction.

Polyvagal Theory gave clinicians, trauma survivors, coaches, bodyworkers, and educators a practical language for what many people already felt in their bodies: when the system does not feel safe, higher reasoning, connection, learning, intimacy, and healing become harder to access.

What Still Stands Even If The Theory Evolves

Even if parts of the original theory are revised, many regulation-based practices stand on their own evidence and lived clinical usefulness.

Practices That Do Not Depend On Polyvagal Theory Being Perfect

  • slow breathing with extended exhalation
  • gentle rhythmic movement
  • safe relational presence and co-regulation
  • voice, humming, chanting, and prosodic sound
  • somatic tracking and body awareness
  • titration, meaning working with small, tolerable doses of sensation
  • pendulation, meaning moving attention between activation and safety

These practices are not weak because a theory is debated. They are body-based pathways that many people can feel directly. The scientific model may continue to evolve, but the human need for regulation does not disappear.

Why This Matters For Somatic Shaking

In my work, I do not use Polyvagal Theory as a rigid belief system. I use it as one lens inside a broader body-based and consciousness-based approach. The body is not a machine. The nervous system is not a motivational quote. And healing is not achieved by forcing the body into intensity before it has enough safety to move.

Good critique is necessary. Spiritual communities need more scientific discipline, not less. Somatic communities need better language, better evidence, and less exaggeration. But scientific critique should make us more precise, not more cynical.

The danger is not that Polyvagal Theory is being questioned. The danger is that people will use the word “debunked” as an excuse to dismiss the body, dismiss trauma responses, dismiss co-regulation, and dismiss the lived reality of people whose nervous systems are asking for safety before transformation.

That is not science. That is intellectual laziness wearing a lab coat.

 

Here’s What To Do

Use Polyvagal Theory as a helpful map, not as a religion. Let the science refine itself. Stay honest about what is proven, what is debated, and what is still emerging. Do not make medical claims. Do not promise trauma healing in one session. Do not turn the vagus nerve into a marketing spell.

But also do not abandon what works in the body just because the explanatory model is being challenged.

  • Orient to your environment.
  • Slow your breath.
  • Lengthen your exhale.
  • Let the body move gently.
  • Shake without forcing.
  • Track sensation without dramatizing it.
  • Build capacity before intensity.
  • Let safety become a physiological experience, not just an idea.

Final Reflection

Polyvagal Theory has not been “debunked” in the way social media wants you to believe. It has been challenged, and some of those challenges are serious. That is how science breathes. But the deeper principle remains: the human being changes when the nervous system has enough safety to stop defending and start reorganizing.
